Doctors and nurses don’t do it alone. There are countless people in the background that contribute to the healthcare system. Pharmacy technician careers are just one of the fantastic opportunities that are out there, that don’t require years and years of schooling, with the corresponding years and years of student loans to go with them.
A pharmacy technician’s job is to help licensed pharmacists with the administrative side of running a pharmacy, including such things as collecting money, answering the phone, stocking shelves then later perhaps moving into such things as maintaining accurate patient records and handling insurance matters.
The first step to becoming a pharmacy tech is graduating high school. From there, it largely depends on where you live. Some states require a formal program of training; others allow pharmacy techs to learn on the job. Of course, in today’s competitive job market going to school, even if it is not required in your state, will help increase your odds of landing this job tremendously or you could choose to participate in an internship program such as the ones offered by CVS and Walgreens.
You don’t have to necessarily attend school physically however. There are online schools available to teach the skills that a pharmacy tech would need to have. The advantage of online schools is that they allow the student to learn at their own pace, spending extra time with the particular lessons that they find a little more difficult.
Once you start working as a pharmacy tech you can expect to earn on average $25,000 salary. Positions in hospitals typically pay better than those in drugstores. The average annual salary for pharmacy techs is $35,000 in Alaska, California, Hawaii, and Washington. You can expect a benefit package as well that offers good health and retirement benefits as well as paid sick leave.
